Great concerts coming up in 2016

I’ve had a little summer break from putting on gigs here at True North Music, and have been away at a number of bluegrass festivals (Didmarton, Gower and Cornish) over the past few weeks. As well as doing some singing and picking of my own, I’ve enjoyed a raft of fantastic bands, including Growling Old Men from the USA, Four Wheel Drive from Germany and many excellent UK groups including the Kentucky Cow Tippers, Hot Rock Pilgrims and Jaywalkers.

I’m delighted to be hosting Jaywalkers in Huddersfield on Saturday 27th February 2016. This young trio from the North West is packed with talent from Mike Giverin (mandolin, songwriting), Jay Bradberry (fiddle, lead vocals) & Lucille Williams (double bass). After starting out playing bluegrass in their early teens (if not before!) they have developed a mature and distinctive sound and repertoire that blends elements of folk, bluegrass and jazz to great effect. Former BBC Young Folk Award finalists, they have honed their music with continual gigging across the UK over the last few years. A class act!

More details and ticket link coming soon!

Then later in the spring we have Laura Cortese & the Dance Cards visiting from the USA on Saturday 15th April. Cortese, an acclaimed fiddle player & singer from California, fronts this eclectic folk/pop quartet, who deliver gorgeous arrangements on fiddles, cello and double bass. Laura studied violin at the renowned Berklee College of Music and has collaborated with many luminaries of the US folk and bluegrass scene as well as regularly teaching fiddle at music camps in both the USA and Europe.

UPDATE [November 2015]…sadly we couldn’t make the dates work after all for True North Music on this this run but Laura & the Dance Cards will still be touring in the UK in April and you should go and see them (I will!). More info nearer the time.
