We’re delighted to be planning 2024 UK tour dates for Golden Shoals, a brilliantly talented and hugely entertaining American duo that blends aspects of Americana, folk, bluegrass, Cajun, jazz and more. Combining old time Appalachian traditions with outstanding contemporary songwriting, Amy Alvey and Mark Kilianski are fine singers and superb musicians, and have been entertaining audiences across the USA since 2013. They have also toured internationally in Australia, Canada, Germany and the UK (making their debut tour here in 2019 under their previous name Hoot & Holler). The duo has an appealing stage presence to complement their impressive musicianship, with a genuine talent for engaging audiences. Mark is a staggeringly good guitar player, and is also excellent on clawhammer banjo. Amy is a talented and versatile fiddler, and is also a great acoustic guitar player. With the addition of excellent lead vocals and harmonies, Golden Shoals have a huge amount of instrumental and stylistic options in their armoury.
Mark and Amy are both alumni of the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston, where they first started to perform together. Initially brought together by a mutual love of American folk music, Golden Shoals’ sound has expanded to allow them to move more freely beyond genre boundaries. Inspired by the enduring spirit of their Appalachian mountain music heroes, including Roscoe Holcomb and Ola Belle Reid, Golden Shoals blend the grit and soul of these influences with the polished technique of their conservatory training, creating a fresh new sound. Formerly known as Hoot & Holler (changing their band name in 2020 to avoid confusion with another artist), the duo released an EP and one full-length album under their original name, and their latest album Golden Shoals in summer 2020, plus several more recent singles.
“Rousing old-time-style music that’s fueled by acerbic modern-day wit.” – No Depression magazine
Amy and Mark have long been in demand for other projects too – they’re both members of old time supergroup Tune Hash, and Mark was part of the 2021 Adeline album project alongside members of Lonesome Ace Stringband and the Slocan Ramblers. Amy also became a radio host in 2022, curating and co-hosting popular roots music show The Old Fashioned on WMOT in Nashville. We’re really looking forward to welcoming Mark and Amy back to the UK – they are brilliant fun as well as being amazing musicians, and picked up a lot of new fans last time they were here.
