After a marvellous concert from the Corn Potato String Band in Sheffield on Saturday night, we’re looking ahead to our next gig there in just over a month’s time. In a real coup for True North Music, I’ve managed to book American bluegrass superstar duo Ron Block & Sierra Hull to perform for us on Saturday 30th July. Ron Block is a long time member of roots supergroup Alison Krauss & Union Station, and a world class musician on 5-string banjo and guitar. As well as his celebrated work as a musician, songwriter and singer with AKUS, Ron has released a number of solo albums including 2015’s brilliant and joyful instrumental collection Hogan’s House of Music, featuring an all-star line-up of great Nashville pickers (including Sierra Hull). Ron is also a multiple Grammy Award winner. I’m lucky to have got to know Ron a little whilst in his banjo class at Sore Fingers music camp a few years ago, and he is a lovely guy as well as being super talented.
Sierra Hull is a mandolin prodigy who first appeared on the Grand Ole Opry stage at just 11 years old and was signed to Rounder Records aged 13, with Alison Krauss and Ron Block among those who championed her from the start. Still only in her early 20s, this hugely talented young woman is a rising star on the American roots scene and a gifted singer, songwriter and instrumentalist. She has released several albums and played numerous concerts and festivals over the years and her most recent album Weighted Mind (produced by banjo genius Béla Fleck) is garnering widespread praise.
Ron and Sierra have been performing together for a number of years and we’re delighted to have booked them to appear in Sheffield at The Greystones, one of only two full concerts in the UK while they are here playing at a couple of big festivals. This is a rare opportunity to see some of the very best bluegrass musicians in the world, up close and personal. Get ready for a fabulous blend of traditional bluegrass, original songwriting and first class musicianship!
Advance tickets are out now, just £15 advance from the Greystones bar (12-6pm daily) or online here (note 10% booking fee at Wegottickets). This gig is certain to sell out – don’t miss it!
