A couple of weeks ago we kicked off True North Music’s 2016 programme with a brilliant concert by the wonderful band Jaywalkers. The talented UK trio wowed a full room at The LBT with their original blend of bluegrass, folk, jazz and blues -what a great night! Here’s a little taste of one of Mike’s original songs, Bow Down, a catchy number with some marvellous mandolin picking, slap bass and driving fiddle…
Since then I’ve been working hard to finalise arrangements for a couple more bookings later in the year, and I’m really pleased to announce concerts by Anna & Elizabeth and Front Country, both from the USA. Anna & Elizabeth are a fascinating duo from Virginia and Maryland who perform an authentic style of old time Appalachian music, with beautiful renditions of traditional songs, haunting fiddle and banjo tunes and an original style of storytelling using hand made “crankies” – beautiful scrolling illustrations. These two gals are superb and charming performers – don’t miss them at our Hepworth Village Hall gig on Saturday 6th August.
A few weeks later we’ll welcome acclaimed California bluegrass band Front Country to Sheffield Greystones on Sunday 28th August. A multi-skilled five-piece playing with traditional bluegrass instrumentation, they confound expectations by coming up with a variety of bluesy, funky and altogether fabulous sounds. I’m absolutely delighted to have booked this amazing band for a True North Music gig. Their not so secret weapon, lead vocalist and songwriter Melody Walker, has a massive, soulful voice…check out this red-hot take on the traditional standard Gospel Train to get a sense of Front Country’s huge talent and creativity!
