Jake Blount is a brilliant American multi-instrumentalist, singer and scholar of Black folk traditions. Jake is an acclaimed artist and rising star of the USA roots music scene, and will tour here in a trio line-up in 2024, featuring regular collaborators, the immensely talented Nelson Williams and Gus Tritsch. Jake’s work shines a light on the major contributions that Black, Indigenous and LGBTQ artists have made to American folk traditions, often previously overlooked. This exceptional young musician has received numerous accolades for his 2020 debut Spider Tales, and the 2022 follow-up, The New Faith, which aims to envision what Black religious music might sound like in a not-so-distant future world devastated by climate change. It was released as part of Smithsonian Folkways’ prestigious African-American Legacy Series and garnered stellar reviews, from The Guardian, Rolling Stone and many more.
Jake has collaborated with renowned musicians including Tatiana Hargreaves and Nic Gareiss, and has been touring widely under his own name since 2021, both solo and with his own band. He has presented his music and research at numerous prestigious venues including Newport Folk Festival and the Smithsonian Institution, and since the release of The New Faith, Jake has been more in demand than ever, touring widely across the USA and beyond. Over the last couple of years, Jake has performed on the iconic NPR Tiny Desk concert, was featured on Mark Radcliffe’s BBC Radio Two Folk Show, and was nominated for Folk Alliance International’s 2023 Folk Artist of the Year Award.
“An uncommon talent” – The Guardian
Jake has been exploring new sounds including electric guitar and percussion, married effectively with the ancient tones of the banjo and fiddle, and this combination went down a storm on his 2023 tour which included Denmark’s massive Roskilde festival and Gate to Southwell Festival in the UK (with hundreds of folk music fans up on their feet dancing to the band’s infectious blend of folk, roots, blues and rock ‘n’ roll!). Jake is an extremely special artist doing important work, and we’re delighted to be working with him again on this 2024 tour. He will be performing with his trio, featuring outstanding double bassist Nelson Williams and gifted multi-instrumentalist Gus Tritsch (guitar, fiddle, banjo uke). Expect a mix of evocative songs and footstomping fiddle tunes, all delivered with a fresh creative approach and featuring exceptional musicianship and soulful singing.
