I’m looking forward to welcoming the wonderful old time/folk duo Anna & Elizabeth to our corner of Yorkshire in a few weeks’ time. My friend Cahalen Morrison (no slouch himself when it comes to singing and picking) recommended that I check out their music, and so I went along to a gig of theirs in Todmorden in spring 2015. I was hugely impressed by their music and singing, but also by their massive love and enthusiasm for the music and for those players and singers that have gone before them. When they’re not on tour, Anna Roberts-Gevalt and Elizabeth LaPrelle are also keen song collectors and archivists, and pay tribute to the old singers and songs in their singing and storytelling.
Anna and Elizabeth’s repertoire includes fresh interpretations of traditional ballads among an eclectic range of songs, plus foot-tapping Appalachian tunes. The duo’s concerts also include what they call “crankies” – beautiful handmade scrolling illustrations of papercuts and embroidered cloth. These interludes, often musically accompanied, contribute to the unique appeal of this accomplished young duo. I’m delighted to have booked Anna & Elizabeth for a concert at Hepworth Village Hall on Saturday 6th August, and they will also be leading a harmony singing workshop (places strictly limited so don’t miss out!). This is going to be a very special evening in a lovely intimate venue.
Concert 8pm (doors 7:30pm). Singing workshop 5pm-6:30pm (places limited, advance bookings only). Doors from 4:30pm, starts promptly at 5pm.
Advance tickets: Concert £12, Workshop £15, Combined ticket £25
