Contemporary bluegrass & Americana from Philly
Now booking for June/July 2019
Man About a Horse is an exciting quintet from Philadelphia PA, which blends newgrass, Americana, rock, blues and more with classic bluegrass instrumentation and top notch harmony vocals. True North Music was privileged to be invited to the IBMA (International Bluegrass Music Association) World of Bluegrass conference and festival in Raleigh, North Carolina this year and Man About a Horse was one of the standout acts showcasing at the event. We’re delighted to be bringing the band over for their debut UK tour in summer 2019!
A chance meeting and discovery of a shared love of bluegrass by co-founders Matt Thomas (bass) and Matt “Roy” Royles (guitar/vocals) led to the formation of Man About a Horse in 2014. The line-up is completed by Dan Whitener (who also tours with Gangstagrass) on banjo/vocals, Matthew Hiller on mandolin, and newest member, fiddler Eric Lee. The band has performed around the United States, sharing concert bills with Old Crow Medicine Show, Ricky Skaggs and Kentucky Thunder, The Travelin’ McCourys and many more. They’ve released two studio recordings to date, their 2015 EP and an eponymous debut album in 2017 which earned widespread praise.
“High energy is an understatement – Man About A Horse is a self-titled debut album that requires dancing or foot-tapping…what it IS, is hard to describe, other than to say it’s good music. The group throws together elements of bluegrass, folk, and a progressive mean streak that distinguishes their sound as original – all ten cuts are a pleasure” – Bluegrass Unlimited
2018 has been a breakout year for the band, including tours of Colorado, the Midwest, and the Southeastern USA. A huge amount of recognition and plaudits have come their way, with Man About a Horse winning the Band contest at Freshgrass festival this summer and being named 2018 Emerging Artist at the prestigious Grey Fox Bluegrass festival in New York. In September 2018, the quintet was nominated for a coveted Band Momentum Award by the International Bluegrass Music Association.
