2022 gigs

The Slocan Ramblers

Saturday 10th September 2022, The Carlile Institute, Meltham

Wednesday 7th September 2022, The Greystones, Sheffield

Thanks to everyone who supported our two local gigs for this superb Canadian band. It was great to have a good turnout for both, especially a sold-out concert in Meltham.

Award-winning Canadian bluegrass band The Slocan Ramblers return in September 2022 for their fourth UK tour. Combining superlative musicianship and catchy songs with an appealing stage presence, this sensational quartet has established a stellar worldwide reputation as a barnstorming live band, gigging and touring almost constantly across North America and Europe over the last decade. Their third album, Queen City Jubilee, gained a prestigious 2019 JUNO Award Nomination and won Traditional Album of the Year at the 2020 Canadian Folk Music Awards. The Slocan Ramblers also won the International Bluegrass Music Association’s 2020 Momentum Band Award.

“The band have gained an enviable reputation, creating an audaciously dynamic sound that, whilst firmly rooted in tradition, has never been afraid to push the envelope ” – Folk Radio UK

After an enforced pause due to the pandemic, in 2021 The Slocan Ramblers got back in the studio and their superb brand new album Up The Hill and Through the Fog was released in June 2022 to glowing reviews.  They also recommenced touring last summer, and have been busy gigging across the USA and Canada ever since then, including a brief foray to Northern Ireland this May to headline the Bluegrass Omagh festival. The Slocans can’t wait to return to England and Wales this September to wow audiences and share their new music and old favourites. We’ve hosted a couple of sold out concerts for them previously, in both Marsden and Sheffield, so we’re thrilled to be hosting this exceptional band for a gig in Meltham this year!

Tickets £14 adv. (£10 for under 21s). Book online at wegottickets.com via the link below. Paper tickets are also available locally in Meltham at Cafe 33 and The Flower Box.

Stillhouse Junkies

Saturday 25th June 2022

The Carlile Institute, Meltham

Thanks to all who came out to this spectacular gig by this wonderful band! A fun time was had by all.

Hailing from Colorado, USA, Stillhouse Junkies perform an entertaining blend of bluegrass, Americana, country roots and blues, combining outstanding musicianship (on fiddle, acoustic guitar, double bass and mandolin) with classic harmonies, catchy songs and a lively stage presence. Born out of a long-standing residency at a distillery in their hometown of Durango, Colorado, Stillhouse Junkies have built a loyal following in their home state and across the American bluegrass scene. Fred, Alissa and Cody travelled to North Carolina last year for the return of the real life International Bluegrass conference and festival, where they wowed audiences with their showcase performances and won the 2021 Momentum Band Award. This talented trio has released three albums to date and recently signed to Nashville’s Dark Shadow Recording label.  Stillhouse Junkies spent several years performing an average of 250 shows a year before the pandemic brought touring to a standstill, and they kept busy in 2020 and 2021 with creative ways to continue bringing their music to fans. They performed a busy programme of front-yard gigs in their home town of Durango, and later produced the winter online series Sidecar. Now back on the road and with their new album due for release later this year, Stillhouse Junkies are sure to win many new fans on their debut tour of the UK. We’re really delighted to be hosting this exceptional band for a concert in Meltham!

Jake Blount + Vivian Leva & Riley Calcagno

Tuesday 31st May 2022

The Greystones, Sheffield

Thanks to everyone who supported this simply spectacular event!

Jake Blount is an award-winning young artist whose debut solo album Spider Tales was released in 2020 to widespread acclaim. An exceptional banjoist and fiddler, and powerful, soulful singer, Jake was also one of the winners of the 2020 Steve Martin Banjo Prize. Jake’s work shines a light on the major contributions that Black, Indigenous and LGBTQ artists have made to American folk and traditional music. He’s also an absolutely mesmerising live performer. Jake has studied with roots music luminaries including Rhiannon Giddens and Bruce Molsky, and has shared his music and research at Newport Folk Festival and the Smithsonian Institution, among many other prestigious venues. He’ll be performing with his own sensational stringband, which includes George Jackson (fiddle, banjo), Nelson Williams (bass) and Gus Tritsch (guitar), all super talented in their own right. Expect a captivating blend of old time fiddle tunes, evocative jazz and blues songs and footstomping folk-Americana and bluegrass.

Opening the show will be the superb duo Vivian Leva & Riley Calcagno with their exquisite blend of folk, Americana, country and bluegrass. Viv and Riley specialise in compelling songs, gorgeous singing and fine musicianship (on guitars, fiddle and clawhammer banjo). Their debut album (released 2021) was produced by acclaimed Grammy-winning Cajun musician Joel Savoy. Vivian grew up in Virginia, going to fiddle festivals with her parents, both acclaimed roots musicians. At nine years old she began writing songs and performing with her father James Leva. Her debut solo album Time Is Everything was released in 2018, and she was named in a Rolling Stone feature as one of the top ten country artists to watch. Riley has also been immersed in traditional music from an early age. Originally from Seattle, his musical skills span fiddle, banjo, guitar, mandolin and voice. Riley is a founding member of The Onlies, an acclaimed young stringband formed when he was just eight years old!  Riley has performed with luminaries including Elvis Costello, Rhiannon Giddens, Bruce Molsky, Altan and Dirk Powell, to name just a few.

Thanks to all who came out to an absolutely superb and spellbinding performance by Jake and his band last weekend – a fitting return to our live music series at the Carlile!

Jake Blount is a compelling, award-winning young artist whose debut full length solo album Spider Tales was released in 2020 to widespread acclaim, with glowing reviews from The Guardian, Rolling Stone and more.
